ONE OF A KIND
What you need to know about bespoke jewellery before you pay your jeweller a visit.
“I want what she’s having” is a phrase you don’t hear very often anymore, if at all. These days, it’s all about personalisation and individualisation. It’s all about “you doing you”. When it comes to style and gifting a loved one with something special (we wouldn’t rule out that loved one being yourself, by the way), this modern-day philosophy is truer and more welcomed than ever. You don’t fit in, you stand out. Be a Beyoncé, not one of the Girl’s Generation girls.
Think about it for a second: Here’s a milestone in your life — perhaps you’ve just turned 40, perhaps you are celebrating your 10th wedding anniversary with your wife — would you really rather go out and buy a Tiffany Key pendant or a Cartier Love Bracelet and be just like a thousand others, or would you rather own, or gift, something that is entirely yours — unique, memorable and plausibly a great conversation starter (just take a look at this gorgeous garnet ring)?
In case bespoke is not something that has crossed your mind before, read on and find out how to get started.
What should you consider is you’re thinking of creating a unique piece from scratch?
First, decide what type of gem you would like for the piece. It helps to know what colour you’re after and your budget. Other questions you should be asking yourself is: What occasions will you be wearing it to (everyday wear or special events)? What style are you looking for (classic or art deco, for example)? These are a good place to start.
What is the bespoke process like?
Again, it starts from the stone. There are three ways of acquiring the stone:
- You may want to reimagine an existing piece of jewellery. In that case, we can remove the stone from its current setting, and design a new setting for you.
- You can shop our selection of loose stones in store.
- We also offer the option of sourcing for the perfect stone for you if you don’t find anything in our collection.
Next, we discuss the designs options. This is when our designer gets a better understand what you need — from style to occasion as mentioned in the first question — before sketching out two design options based on that discussion. From there, we fine-tune your preferred choice and make adjustments. Once you’re happy, production begins.
Are there extra charges for bespoke services?
We can’t speak for other jewellers, but we do not charge extra for this service.
This ring featured here is stunning. It is an example of a bespoke design from The Canary Diamond. What inspired the design?
The stone, a royal garnet (the best of its kind) from Brazil at 18.74ct, was the inspiration. Our designer studied it, its size, colour and type before coming up with the idea to create a design that perfectly showcases the depth of the stone. The designer wanted to give it a finer finish with smaller diamonds, which the petal motif of the design did nicely.
Lastly, is there anything else one should know before they set out to design their one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery?
Less is more. Don’t over-complicate the design. Let the stone be the star.
