LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE

“More joy”. That is Christopher Kane’s modern mantra. Considering the current state of the world, more joy is what we need more than ever.
Only a few weeks ago, going to a yoga class, eating out at a restaurant, getting dressed for another day at the office, grocery shopping, hugging your friends, taking off to Bali for some me-time on a whim — mundane events that bring us joy — had felt so ordinary and normal. We have taken these simple pleasures for granted, and now many of them are a luxury we cannot afford — at least for a while.

What can we do but adapt and gain new perspectives on life and the way we live? That, in itself, could be a source of joy, no? It is only when something or someone is no longer readily available to you that you begin to appreciate them all over again. So, now, where will we go looking for joy when joy — like Dettol wipes and oranges — seems to be in short supply? Well, we can find them in the things we do have.
Can’t go to a yoga class? We have apps and YouTube videos. Can’t eat out and too frustrated to go to the supermarket? There is no lack of delivery services at our disposal. Can’t see your best friends in person as often or give them a hug? Hello, FaceTime! Hello Instagram. Instead of hugs, write someone a letter and seal it with a kiss — when was the last time you did that? As for Bali — or Paris or Rome for that matter — well, instead of going away, perhaps it’s time to go within to find what we’re looking for.

At a time when there is much doom and gloom, we can choose ot look on the bright side. Both metaphorically and literally. One simple trick we find to be an effective and instant mood booster is to wear bright colours. Neon bright. Stabilo-inspired colours were one major trend that caught our eye at the recent round of Fashion Weeks. What we hadn’t realised then was how necessary Slurpee green and bubblegum pink, traffic-stopping yellow and tangerine orange would quickly become in our quest for more simple joys.
You know what they say: When the going gets tough, the tough gets glowing. So glow.
