ASSCHER IN THE ERA OF PIPPA MIDDLETON
Move aside, Kate, all eyes are (still) on the younger Middleton’s breathtaking 3.5-carat Asscher-cut engagement ring, which we are certain is already the inspiration for many upcoming proposals the world over — including one Prince Harry’s, perhaps?
Oh, Pippa. You’ve got us wrapped around your ring finger.
Ever since James Mathews put a 3.5-carat Asscher-cut diamond ring on Pippa Middleton last July, the world has been obsessed with that spectacular art-deco-inspired bling. In fact, it would appear that the Asscher is kicking the a** of Kate’s Princess Diana heirloom as the preferred ring du jour. Or, at least as the more talked-about one. Don’t believe us? Google it. “Pippa Middleton engagement ring” fetches over a million results, while “Kate Middleton engagement ring” has just 840,000. Sorry, Duchess.
In case you have been living under a rock (pun intended) and have not been clued in on everything you need to know about Pippa’s ring, here’s a cheat sheet:
Cut: Asscher (named after Joseph Asscher who designed the cut in 1902)
Size: Approximately 3.5 carats
Style: Art deco
Where from: London jeweller Robinson Pelham
Price: About US$260,000
The wedding may be three-week-old news, but you can be sure that this ring is going to remain a hot topic and no doubt the inspiration for countless proposals the world over for a while — until the next big wedding. Could it be Prince Harry’s? Well, until rumours turn into another fairy-tale-come-true and (Meghan) Markle gets her sparkler, we will be keeping our eyes on Pippa’s giant Asscher.
In the mean time, gentlemen, if you’re planning to pop the question, you might consider the five variations that, in our opinion, would definitely make the cut.
Go Vintage
For the traditional woman at heart, a vintage design — complete with intricate detailing and a precious heirloom quality to it — is exactly the timeless and charming piece she will say “yes” to.
Do Modern
While we can’t argue that a diamond halo frames an Asscher-cut diamond stunningly — yes, just like Pippa’s — we find ourselves pretty partial to the simple elegance of letting the leading stone shine solo. If your leading lady is anything like us, then this is it.
A Touch Of Colour
When Big gave Carrie a black diamond ring, he famously said: “Because you’re not like anyone else.” Is the woman you’re about to ask to be your wife one-of-a-kind like that? Well, then a “plain” diamond just won’t do, will it? Maybe black is a tad extreme, so picking her birthstone is one way to go. Hey Harry, we hear Meghan’s birthstone is the chartreuse green Peridot. Just saying.
Three Is Better Than One
It’s been said that each stone on a trilogy ring represents the past, present and future. Some have also said they are symbolic of friendship, love and fidelity — three very important ingredients to your relationship… Ok, fine, who are we kidding? There are three stones. That’s “yes” three times over.
