FOUR TYPES OF GEMS FOR FOUR TYPES OF MUMS
One of the most challenging occasions of the year is upon us: Mother’s Day. A day dedicated to celebrating (and impressing) the most important women in our lives: Mum, grandma, the mother of your children… How do you outdo last year’s gift?
Sure, there’s no easy answer to that, but when all else fails, jewellery is always a good idea. That said, it does beg another head-scratcher of a question: What kind of jewellery is the best kind of jewellery for her? If you’re not careful here, you might find yourself spending a bomb on a dud.
While snooping around her jewellery box may give you a sufficiently good idea of what she fancies, you might run the risk of giving her more of the same. Does she really need another heart-shaped pendant?
This year, to jazz things up a notch, you might consider choosing a piece of jewellery that correlates to her personality. Yes, according to one Dani Johnson, who designed the jewellery equivalent to the MBTI personality test (well, sort of), the gemstone one wears does apparently say a lot about her. So, we figured, if you find out what gem mother is, then you will surely find her the perfect gift. Now the final question: How well do you know her?
EMERALD
What she’s like: She sees the world in black and white. She is all about facts, figures and logic. It might be true that she is perceived to be cold or insensitive, but truth is, she just wants to know the bottom line and understand as quickly as possible in order to make a sound decision. She also loves systems and organisation — so much so that she sometimes runs the danger of not actually moving forward or getting started on a project because she wants everything to be perfectly organised first. Oh, and she’s very likely the grammar police and hates typos and tardiness.
What you can learn from her: If your mum is an Emerald, then you’ve probably learned a lot about being responsible, timely, concise and organised from her.
Her mantra: “Details matter; it’s worth waiting to get it right.” — Steve Jobs
RUBY
What she’s like: She is a competitive one. In fact, if she doesn’t think she could win at a game, she probably will not even participate. She has big goals, and wants to be the best at everything, and she thrives on it. It’s likely that she’s a business owner because she is blessed with extra confidence in their abilities to be the best and is likely to take risks. Because she is so goal-oriented, there might be times when she could come across as being too direct and cause bruised egos.
What you can learn from her: If you have a dream or a goal, go all out to achieve it, and never give up.
Her mantra: “Winning is everything. It is the only thing.” — Vince Lombardi
SAPPHIRE
What she’s like: She’s the life of the party. If mother is a sapphire, it’ll make complete sense why she wants everything in life to be fun. She is positive and sees the best in others. Because of that, she tends to be a social butterfly and loves to surround herself with people, places and experiences.
What you can learn from her: Don’t take life too seriously, and learn to have fun.
Her mantra: “Fun is good.” — Dr Seuss
PEARL
What she’s like: Helping others is her number one motivation. She is not motivated by money, competition or the limelight. But rather she wants to feel like she is contributing to a cause bigger than herself. For that reason, she is involved in philanthropic organisations and work. Thoughtful and patient, she has a penchant for authenticity and trust, and has no tolerance for disingenuousness and conflict. Unlike Sapphires who thrive in the joys of meeting new people, the Pearl mum values long and rooted relationships and prefers heart-to-hearts to big social gatherings.
What you can learn from her: Loyalty and generosity. She has taught you to the value of keeping your word, serving others, and being a loyal friend.
Her mantra: “No one has ever become poor by giving.” — Anne Frank
