HOW TO MAKE A STATEMENT IN BLACK
Diana Vreeland once said that “black is the hardest colour in the world to get right”. But “hard” was hardly an obstacle to a group of determined, passionate and powerful women on a mission to do what’s right. On January 7, 2018, these women showed the world why they wear black (and how), and no one can possibly accuse them of getting it wrong.
At the 75th Golden Globes earlier this month, many of the world’s most celebrated Hollywood stars from Oprah Winfrey to Meryl Streep turned up and turned the red carpet into a sea of black. That evening, they were not merely there to flaunt their haute couture, sip Moët & Chandon and receive golden statuettes for their achievements. That evening, they were not there to stand out but to stand together in solidarity to protest an imbalance of power which has led to sexual abuse and assault in the industry and elsewhere in the world.
In a nutshell, that’s #whywewearblack. But the how, if we’re being honest, was pretty noteworthy, too. Many A-listers were content to keep it simple and classy, opting to do black with just a touch of sparkle, nothing too showy. Take Claire Foy, who wore a sleek Stella McCartney pantsuit with a pair of diamond earrings. This minimalistic take on accessorising was also preferred by Margot Robbie, Natalie Portman and Shailene Woodley who made diamond stud earrings look like a very good idea.

Zoe Kravitz and Alicia Vikander made their own statements, each with a marquee ring worn on the index and middle finger, respectively, to go with their elegantly fuss-free get-up.
On Alison Brie’s décolletage was a stunning V-shaped diamond collar, while Issa Rae went for one with an emerald stone you simply can’t ignore.
If these amazing women in black have inspired you to stand up and do your part for this movement — whether it means starting your own “wear black” campaign among friends, colleagues and your community, or planning a fundraiser gala, perhaps you could also take a leaf out of their style book to dress the part.
