As far as we’re concerned, Beyoncé called it in 2011. We were on the cusp of a new wave of feminism. Since then, our lives — everything from our Instagram feed to our T-shirts — have been inundated with girl-power slogans and hashtags. “The future is female.” “We should all be feminists.” “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other.” (OK, that last one should really be attributed to Madeleine Albright, circa 2006, but let’s be honest, it wasn’t exactly a thing until 2013 when Taylor Swift made it a hit, was it?)
Not surprisingly, everyone from Dior to Netflix has been quick to ride on this giant wave. Marvel is no exception with its timely release of Wonder Woman starring Gal Gardot (did you know that the 2017 Wonder Woman’s very own superhero is — wait for it — Beyoncé, who sort of got her the job?).
Like many around the world, we’re suitably gaga over Gal’s beauty rendition of Diana Prince and her humanity, sense of justice and righteousness, her unbridled authenticity and, hello!, her ability to kick butt without destroying her hair or marring her make-up. There’s a superpower every woman needs. We all have our own (real-life) battles to fight, and it would be really nice to be able to slay it without our mascara smudging by mid-day. Right? But alas, since that is not likely to happen, guess we have little choice but to turn to another source of super power: Jewellery (aka a very effective distraction from any flaws you wish to downplay).
