THAT PRECIOUS FIRST
Do you remember your first kiss? The first time a boy told you, “I love you’? Do you remember the first time you explored a foreign city all by yourself with nothing but a map and a whole lot of mixed feelings from trepidation to thrill and liberation? What about your first job interview? And the first time you had your heart broken?
First times. There’s something so life-changing about them you never forget. Each first marks a new beginning into unchartered territory and emotions. It’s exciting. It’s frightening. It’s a reassuring. It’s unexpected. Every time you do or experience something new, you grow a little, learn something about yourself and the world suddenly feels a little less intimidating. Whether good, bad or downright embarrassing, they not only make for great dinner conversations, but more significantly, the tapestry of our lives and our stories. And they are, without a doubt, moments that are worth celebrating and reminiscing.
When we were children, many of these first times were commemorated by little paraphernalia we deemed too precious to jettison: A ticket stub to your first movie or museum visit; a stamp from your pen pal’s first letter; your first polaroid picture with your best friend at age five; saga seeds from your first class excursion… Maybe you still keep them in a treasure box somewhere. We do.
Then, you grow up, and one day, in lieu of keeping boarding passes from your honeymoon and the payslip for your pay check Number One (which probably does not exist any more than floppy disks do), you start to collect jewellery instead. If you’re lucky, your mother or grandmother might already have started building your collection from the time you were born, with a family heirloom, perhaps, or on your graduation day. But trust us when we say there is nothing quite like the very first piece of fine jewellery you’re going to gift yourself with. And it is never too early to start doing your research and working towards acquiring it. Some day, it is going to make a very good story to your children… and their children.
